What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic medicine emphasizes prevention and optimization of health through therapeutic modalities that support the body’s inherent healing processes, including modern, traditional, scientific, and empirical methods.

Naturopathic medicine, whose roots date back to the 1890s, is founded on 6 principles:

  1. First, Do No Harm (Primum Non Nocere) Naturopathic medicine follows three guidelines to avoid harming the patient:
    1. Utilize methods and medicinal substances that minimize the risk of harmful side effects, using the least force necessary.
    2. Avoid when possible the harmful suppression of symptoms.
    3. Acknowledge, respect, and work with the individual’s self-healing process.
  2. The Healing Power of Nature (Vis Medicatrix Naturae) Naturopathic medicine recognizes an inherent self-healing process in people that is ordered and intelligent. It works to identify and remove obstacles to healing and recovery, and to facilitate and augment this inherent self-healing process.
  3. Identify and Treat the Causes (Tolle Causam) Identify and remove the underlying causes of illness rather than merely eliminate or suppress symptoms.
  4. Doctor as Teacher (Docere) Naturopathic doctors educate their clients and encourage self-responsibility for health. They also recognize and employ the therapeutic potential of the doctor-patient relationship.
  5. Treat the Whole Person Taking into account individual physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental, social, and other factors, a holistic approach.
  6. Prevention Focusing on prevention of disease by assessing risk factors, heredity, and susceptibility to disease, and by making appropriate interventions in partnership with clients to prevent illness

“After years of failed Dr experiences I had all together given up on the medical system and taken my health Into my own hands. Dr Scott has more than surpassed my expectations and has become someone I can trust and honestly talk to. Dr Scott was interested in more than just symptom management, she really goes after the cause of your issues. She’s honest, open and smart. This is what a real Doctor should look like. Thank you Dr Scott for your passion and dedication to REAL medicine.”

“I have been a patient of Dr. Scott for about two years now and I am very happy with the level of care I have received. Dr. Scott takes a more functional medicine approach to healthcare. She looks for the root cause of my issue rather than just prescribing some medication that is just putting a band-aid on a bigger problem. She is a very knowable and a skilled doctor. I highly recommend Dr. Scott.”
